Marinated Flank Steak

I can count the amount of times I've purchased flank steak on one hand--it's a cut of meat that I seldom buy, because it tends to be rather pricey. I happened to find a piece marked down at the grocery store last night, so I thought I'd treat my husband and I to one of my favorite recipes from growing up! My Mom used to make this flank steak for special occasions--mostly for my Dad's birthday, as it was one of his favorites. It's so very simple to do and the marinade only calls for three ingredients. The hardest part is having to patiently wait 24 hrs to let it marinate before being able to cook it!

Wishing everyone a very Happy New Year!!!

Marinated Flank Steak

5 Tablespoons Italian dressing
4 Tablespoons soy sauce
3 Tablespoons Russian dressing
Flank Steak (Approximately 2 lbs)

Directions:

Mix all marinade ingredients well in a shallow dish. Place meat in dish and turn to coat meat evenly. Marinate meat at least 24 hours, turning every 4-6 hours. Grill meat until cooked as desired and serve with sliced mushrooms. (Make sure you slice against the grain!)

NOTE: You would be surprised at how far that amount of flank steak goes--it doesn't seem like a lot, but 2 lbs should easily serve a family of 4-5. Also, I used a grill pan and cooked my steak on my stovetop. I grilled the meat approximately 4-5 minutes on each side for medium rare. My husband NEVER ate steak prepared anything less than "well done", but after the first time I convinced him to try medium rare, he was sold! I owe it to my Dad for convincing me that meat tastes so much more flavorful when it's prepared this way!

  1. I've never found a flank steak at my grocery store. Is the cut of meat called something else also?? There have been several recipes I have wanted to try using flank steak, but since I can't find it I haven't. This sounds like a really yummy marinade. My husband loves his meat medium (it grosses me out!!) and I know he would love this.
I hope you have a happy new year!!! I'm so glad for all the new friendships I have found in 2009 :)

  2. I'm not sure, Heidi...I don't believe I've ever seen it called anything else?!? Flank steak is really good in Chinese dishes, but it is kind of expensive. I ONLY bought it b/c it was marked down since the sell by date was the date I purchased it. As a general rule, it seems to be about $6 - $8/lb which isn't normally within my budget! I happened to find this piece marked down to $4.99/lb, so I splurged :) As for the way it's cooked, I know some people feel ill when they see any "pink" on their meat--my Mom always eats her meat well-done! Have a wonderful evening and year to come! It's been such a pleasure getting to know you through your blog (and especially through your recent video!)

  3. Yumm... this does sound very good. I've only seen it called flank steak as well. I agree, it is pricey, so I've only used it in making Chinese dishes. This sounds so good, though that I'm going to give this a try. Ole Sweetie-Pi LUVS steak!

  6. I don't buy steak very often either (just because my boys prefer chicken) but I like the idea of Italian dressing, soy sauce, and Russian dressing... Mmmm!
