Whole Baked Chicken in the Crock Pot

I've mentioned my "issues" with whole chickens in previous posts...I don't know why, but they somewhat gross me out! I pride myself on being a good shopper, however, and seeing as how there were very limited "beef/chicken/pork" items on sale this past week, I broke down and bought a whole chicken...on sale for $.88/lb, I might add :) I noticed a while back that Heidi (Tried-and-True Cooking with Heidi) posted a crock pot chicken recipe and with her rave reviews, I knew it had to be great! I followed her recipe to a tee, except I think my chicken was closer to 5 lbs (I was hoping to have a little extra to make some chicken salad for myself, except we just about polished off the whole bird....that's how good it was!) I also one and a halved the spices, due to the larger size of the chicken. The chicken turned out perfectly...so moist and tender! I had an appointment yesterday afternoon, so I only cooked it on high for about an hour and a half and then turned it down to low for approximately 5 1/2 hours.
(This was my plate...I was working on the thighs!)

Whole Baked Chicken in the Crock Pot

1 whole chicken (2-3 lb) --again, I used a 5 lb chicken!
2 tsp salt (I used Kosher salt)
1/2 tsp pepper
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp garlic powder

Directions:

Wad 3-4 pieces of aluminum foil into 3 inch balls and place in bottom of crock pot. Pour enough water in crock pot to just cover the bottom. (I used about 1/2 inch of water). Rinse chicken and pat dry. Mix seasonings in a small bowl; rub into chicken. Place chicken in crock pot, on top of foil "balls". Cover and cook on high for 2 hours and then turn crock pot to low for an additional 5 hours.

  1. I LOVE throwing a whole chicken in the crockpot. Just about the easiest thing to do when you know you've got a busy day...we love it with steamed rice.

  3. I love "roasting" my chicken in the crockpot!!! And, not sure what your issues are with chickens - but I have problems with most raw meats, and have bought vinyl gloves (in the first aid/bandaid aisle) just to use in meat prep. It makes things less gross for me... :-)

  11. I hate cooking meat with bones! I do a roast chicken in the oven, but it really smokes up the place and I have to touch it a lot! What size and shape of crockpot did you use? I am going to try it!

    Don't get me wrong, I am a good cook, I just hate bones and chickens.:)

  12. We really enjoyed this chicken and I will definitely make it again! I don't think I'll ever make a whole chicken in the crockpot, any other way! It was incredibly easy and SO moist...it literally fell off of the bone.

    Stephanie--my "issues" with whole chickens are purely in my head :) It just grosses me out to see it "whole" and imagine it once running around!

    SnoWhite--definitely try it!!! I really don't think you'll be the least bit disappointed!

    Kathy--We tend to buy boneless/skinless chicken breasts way more often than pieces with bones, but trust me...I really think once you try the whole chicken this way, you'll almost prefer it in the crockpot! I've made it in the oven a couple of times and while it was good, it was not near as moist and flavorful as this recipe. Regarding my crockpot, I have a few different sizes/shapes, but I used a 6 qt oval one...more than enough room to accomodate a 5 lb whole chicken! I actually swear by this particular crockpot...it's a Rival programmable one that I think retails for $49.99, but if you have a Bed, Bath and Beyond by you and can use a 20% off coupon, it would run you about $40. Perfect holiday gift idea, if you don't have one...it's my favorite!

  13. It's been quite awhile since I roated a bird in the crock pot, but I remember how moist it was. I'll have to try this yummy looking version!
